Already soon after his official debut at the Goteborg Opera (1978), Jeffery Tate embarked upon a successful international career as a conductor..

 

From 1985–2000 he was principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra, from 1987–98 principal guest conductor of the Orchestre National de France, and from 1991–95 principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2001 Maestro Tate was named honorary conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, in 2005 he became music director of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Since the beginning of the 2009–10 season, Tate has been chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.

 

Jeffery Tate was born in 1943 at Salisbury, England. He initially studied medicine in Cambridge. After earning his doctorate, he began his musical career as a pianist at the London Opera Centre. He joined the staff of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where he was active until 1977 and collaborated with Solti, Davis, Kleiber, and Pritchard. Jeffery Tate was an assistant to Karajan, Levine, and Boulez. He today conducts in the world’s leading opera houses.
