Christine M. Merkel

has over twenty years of experience in the area of intercultural work and politics with a focus on the advancement and development of cultural diversity at European and international levels.
 
After studies of psychology, history, political science, and sociology, Christine M. Merkel used her knowledge for peace and conflict settlements, human rights, and international relationships as a political advisor not only in Germany, but also in North and South America, Central and East Europe, as well as in Africa and South and Central Asia. From 1985–88 she was a consultant for foreign policy in the European Parliament. From 1989–93 she worked in Holland in a managerial capacity for international human rights organizations. From 1991 to 1994 she was vice-president and subsequently executive director of the International NGO Study Center El Taller, Tunis. She has published on subjects concerning the development of democracy, cultural and educational policy, and conflict research.
 
Since 1994 Christine M. Merkel has been active for the German UNESCO commission, since 2002 as director of the culture department Memory of the World, and in 2010–11 as chairwoman of the cultural committee of the Council of Europe. In private life, Christine M. Merkel is an enthusiastic singer with training in classical bel canto, and a marathon runner.
